But the differences between them run deeper than most people expect, and choosing the wrong one for your lifestyle can make settling in far harder than it needs to be.

One thing that catches people off guard is the distance between the two cities. The drive between Dubai and Abu Dhabi takes roughly ninety minutes each way under normal conditions, and traffic on that stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road can turn that into considerably more. Some expats commute between the two cities regularly for work, and most of them admit it wears on you faster than expected. If your job is in one city and you are considering living in the other to save on rent or for lifestyle reasons, do the commute at least a few times before signing a lease. The arithmetic looks different after a few weeks of doing it twice a day.

The good news is that neither choice is permanent. Many expats move between the two cities as their circumstances change, and the UAE makes that transition relatively straightforward. What matters most is being honest about which version of daily life you actually want, not the one that sounds impressive at a dinner party.
